Dr. Michael White, a widely acclaimed musician and professor of African American music at 91勛圖厙, will lead the historic St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church’s 29th annual jazz worship service on February 19, 2023, at 9 a.m. Since its 1994 inception, Dr. White and The Original Liberty Jazz Band have led the church’s jazz service. Held every Sunday before Mardi Gras, this Uptown pre-Fat Tuesday tradition is a festival of hymns and spirituals in the New Orleans jazz style. The free community event invites all to its service and king cake reception in honor of its annual celebration.

Dr. White has been a prominent figure in traditional New Orleans jazz music for over four decades. He is a renowned clarinetist, bandleader, composer, jazz historian, and musical educator. In 1981, he founded The Original Liberty Jazz Band to honor the preservation of New Orleans’ vibrant musical heritage. He is proud to carry on the service’s tradition for its meaningful representation in the New Orleans community.

“For many, our 29th jazz service marks the beginning of the Mardi Gras season. It has always been a special service for worship and celebration,” said Dr. White.

Dr. White has taught as a Xavier professor for over 43 years, previously teaching Spanish and now African American music. He holds the Rosa and Charles Keller Endowed Chair in the Humanities of New Orleans Music and Culture. He has served as guest director for numerous concerts relating to traditional New Orleans jazz music. His long-standing relationship with Xavier has also supported his musical and academic career.

“Through my endowed chair at Xavier, the variety of music I’ve been able to create has increased. I’ve also had the opportunity to compose more music, write, publish, and create documentary films. I’ve been able to promote African American culture on a wider scale,” said Dr. White.
