Art Exhibition Student Performance

New Orleans is known for its exciting atmosphere filled with food, music, and art. 91Թ students are enhancing that atmosphere by contributing to the city’s ever-growing, exciting art scene. To close out the fall semester, Xavier’s Department of Art and Performance Studies curated and presented a special exhibition and performance. The Xavierites who work tirelessly to create art paid tribute to what they learned on campus all year.

The exhibit featured students’ original artwork made throughout the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. Dr. Mackie-Stephenson, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Performance Studies, directed the performance which included original poetry and monologues devised by the class.

“Within this department and coursework, students were able to do more than explore a new world, but grasp the true meaning behind performing,” said Dr. Mackie-Stephenson. “There were tough moments and joyful ones once students started to feel connected to the work. Our goal and mission are to explore, connect and then exhibit.”

The performance was inspired by the “Knowing Who We Are” exhibit at New Orleans’ Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The students also paid homage to the museum as it celebrated its 20th anniversary; it is home to the most significant collection of art of the American South in the world.

“The art exhibited was beautiful! I felt like I was walking through the museum. Exposing the Xavier community to art is extremely important because we're trying to showcase Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) and embrace creativity,” said Dr. Mackie-Stephenson.

Xavier’s Department of Art and Performance Studies continues to push forth the university’s mission of contributing to a more just and humane society through art by granting students opportunities to enhance and develop their art experience, while highlighting their talent and creativity.
