The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

focuses on the art and science of teaching and prepare candidates to teach diverse k-12 student populations.

We offer programs in the following areas:

  • All Levels Grades K-12, M.A.T. 
  • Elementary Education (Grades 1-5), M.A.T.
  • Elementary/Special Education (Grades 1-5), M.A.T. 
  • Middle School/Special Education (Grades 4-8), M.A.T. 
  • Secondary Education (Grades 6-12), M.A.T. 
  • Secondary/Special Education (Grades 6-12), M.A.T.

The Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction (MA)

focuses on the art and science of teaching and is a thirty-nine-hour program designed by the candidate to meet career and educational goals. The MA is student-led, only fifteen of the thirty-nine hours are prescribed. The student with assistance from faculty advisors design programs to meet their needs. This degree does not lead to initial certification. Graduates can take positions as reading specialists, lead teachers, academic coaches, and curriculum coaches.
We offer programs in the following areas:
  • Curriculum and Instruction Special Interest - Teacher Leader - Non-Certification, M.A.
  • Curriculum and Instruction Special Interest - Non-Certification, M.A.
  • Curriculum and Instruction - Reading Specialist, - Reading Specialist Add-On Endorsement
  • Curriculum and Instruction - SPED - MILD - Moderate Add-On Endorsement

Admissions Requirements:

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Admissions Requirements:

  1. Submit an official transcript from an accredited university certifying a non-education baccalaureate degree;
  2. Must have a 2.50 or higher grade point average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale;
  3. Must take , but no minimum score requirement
  4. Two Academic or Professional Letters of Recommendation on official letterhead and signed by someone who can speak to your potential as a graduate student.
  5. Personal statement/statement of interest detailing why you chose the program and Xavier University for graduate studies; and
  6. Must pass Praxis content-specific exam.

 

Mild/Moderate: Add-on Endorsement to Elementary Grades (1-5) Certificate; Middle School Grades (4-8) Certificate; Secondary (6-12) Certificate

  1. Submit an official transcript from an accredited university certifying a baccalaureate degree;
  2. Must have a 2.50 or higher grade point average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale;
  3. Must take , but no minimum score requirement;
  4. Two Academic or Professional Letters of Recommendation on official letterhead and signed by someone who can speak to your potential as a graduate student.
  5. Personal statement/statement of interest detailing why you chose the program and Xavier University for graduate studies.
  6. Must hold a Valid* certificate in Elementary Grades (1-5) and/or, Middle Grades (4-8) and/or,  Secondary Grades (6-12) certification area.

Reading Specialist

  6. Must hold a Valid* certificate in Elementary Grades (1-5) and/or, Middle Grades (4-8) and/or,  Secondary Grades (6-12) certification area.

We are also proud to have the Norman C Francis Teacher Resident (NCFTR) Program in our Division.

The Norman C. Francis Teacher Residency (NCFTR) prepares diverse cohorts of community-based educators in a Residency experience through deep investments in mentorship, coaching, and relevant graduate school coursework. This sustainable approach to teacher development positively impacts student achievement in high-poverty and minority schools in New Orleans, creating a more just and humane society. Residents are selected through an intensive application process and matched to an elementary, middle, or high school. As teacher candidates, residents pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching degree while receiving on-the-job experience from a credentialed mentor teacher at their school

NCFTR combines coursework and on-the-job coaching to ensure our NCFTRs are equipped to support students’ success in school and in life.

Funding and Discounts

We offer tuition discounts to current teachers and school personnel in the fall and spring semesters.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching.

A TEACH Grant is different from other federal student grants because it requires you agree to complete a teaching service obligation as a condition for receiving the grant, and if you don't complete the service obligation, the TEACH Grant will be converted to a loan that you must repay, with interest.
