Upward Bound

What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound helps: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree or higher. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post secondary education.

Services Provided By Upward Bound

The Upward Bound program consists of an Academic Year Component and a six-week Summer Program and Summer Bridge Program.

Academic Year

The academic year program consists of opportunities for students to attend Saturday School where students participate in academic classes on Xavier’s campus taught by certified high school teachers or college instructors. Classes include current high school and college academic subjects as well as ACT preparation and testing. During Saturdays, students receive academic reinforcement in their current high school courses.

Summer Program

Six-week non-residential program for rising 9th through 11th-grade students. Students will attend classes on Xavier’s campus Monday through Thursday where they are enrolled in classes that will prepare them for the upcoming academic school year. Fridays are reserved for Field Trips.

Summer Bridge Program

A six-week residential program for seniors who are enrolled in Upward Bound Math & Science and graduated from their respective high schools. The students are enrolled in at least 4 credit college courses in addition to completing an internship in their STEM career of interest. Qualified recipients will receive free tuition, room, and board, and meals.
