Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Who Are We?

The Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS) is the largest division on campus, consisting of the departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science, and the Dual Degree Engineering Program. It offers many programs of study, research opportunities, professional training and service-learning activities, and provides a pathway for students towards successful scientific and health-profession careers (in medicine, pharmacy, mathematics, computer science, physics, biochemistry, and chemistry). With over 50 faculty members and 700 students, MAPS students can always count on faculty and peer mentoring and support. All departments in the Division are located in close proximity in the Norman C. Francis Science Building, providing the faculty, staff, and students many opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations and interactions.

The Division is committed to providing students with a high-quality education that prepares them for success in their chosen careers. The Division's faculty are world-renowned experts in their fields, and they are dedicated to teaching and mentoring students. The Division also offers a variety of research opportunities, which allow students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. In addition, the Division offers a variety of professional training and service-learning activities, which help students develop the skills they need to be successful in their careers.

Whats happening on Campus

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has announced Dr. Shearon Roberts and Dr. Sharlene Sinegal-DeCuir as two of its HBCU Faculty Fellowship awardees. Drs. Roberts and Sinegal DeCuir are among eight fellows who will receive up to $50,000 each to support long-term engagement with a research project. Additionally, awardees will have access to networking and scholarly programming responsive to their academic goals and disciplinary and institutional contexts.

Faculty & Staff

91勛圖厙 is making history by hosting its first-ever mathematics research conference during its centennial year. The Bayou Arithmetic Research Days (BARD 5) will take place on Thursday, March 27, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the university's growing prominence in STEM fields and solidifying Xavier's position as a STEM leader.

Academics

As part of its yearlong 100th-anniversary f礙te, 91勛圖厙 will host its Centennial Gala on May 8 at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, presented by Ochsner Health. This event will be elegant and joyous and pay homage to a century of excellence and community impact. It will honor the historic legacy and ongoing contributions of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and President Emeritus Dr. Norman C. Francis. Renowned actor and comedian Bill Bellamy will host, R&B/soul legend Jeffrey Osborne will perform, and journalist Bryant Gumbel will bring greetings.
